TECHNO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF CO2 CAPTURE FROM FLUE GAS BY AMINE ABSORPTION AND MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY
RESUMO
This research work presents the techno-economic analysis of amine absorption process and membrane technology for the removal of CO2 from flue gas emitted from coal fired power plant by using Aspen HYSYS. Recently, membrane technology has shown great potential for CO2 capture, despite the fact that amine absorption is still considered as most suitable technology for CO2 capture. In the case of amine absorption process, optimization study has been carried out by considering diethanolamine (DEA) as a solvent, whereas a polymer [PVA (poly vinyl alcohol) thin layer supported on polysulfone] membrane is used for CO2 capture in the case of membrane separation process. The feasibility of amine absorption process is evaluated by the optimization of solvent flow rate, reboiler duty, and the amine loading, while the feasibility of membrane process is evaluated for different pressure ratios across the membrane. Total capital investment and flue gas processing cost for both technologies has been evaluated. The techno-economic analysis reveals that CO2 capture cost by amine absorption is ($30.7/ton CO2), considerably lower than membrane technology ($42/ton CO2 recovered).
