DRAG REDUCTION WITH ADDITIVES IN MULTIPHASE FLOW: A LITERATURE SURVEY

RESUMO

A survey of the published literature concerning drag reduction with additives is presented. The topic is introduced and a history of research in the field is given. Characteristics of flows with drag reduction are described and the classical methods of quantifying drag-reduced flows are introduced. Typical molecular features of Drag Reducing Additives (DRAs) are discussed, and an outline is given of the proposed mechanisms for the drag reduction phenomenon. Field and experimental data relating to the application of DRAs in single-phase oil pipelines are described. The issues relating to degradation of DRA molecules by shear are discussed. Finally, published work on drag reduction in multiphase flows is reviewed, with particular emphasis on experimental procedures and results obtained.
