EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF BREAKDOWNS IN GLIDING ARC SYSTEM
RESUMO
The phenomena of breakdowns in gliding arc device (GLIDARC) are studied experimentally for air, argon, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Special emphasis is placed on the thermal and dielectric kinds of breakdowns and the conditions of their occurrence. The results show that the breakdown between the narrowest points of the gliding arc electrodes is submitted to the Paschen's law but is strongly affected by the conditions of the cathode surface, the gas flow injected in direction perpendicular to the axis of the discharge and gas purity. The results agree with the well-known general relations of voltage breakdown for different gases. The experiments demonstrate that the breakdowns between arc and electrode, for high flow rate, are almost always dielectric whereas the breakdown between the parts of arc is thermal origin. For low flow rate, the thermal breakdowns between arc and electrode can occur. The analysis of voltage breakdown ΔU, time breakdown Δt and the parameter of ΔU/Δt shows that the breakdowns in gliding arc do not always result to simple mechanism dielectric or thermal breakdowns.
