RESUMO

An innovative instrument for measuring heat flux from flames encountered during fire hazards has been developed based on the working principle of thermal sensors. The two main parts of the instrument are the heat detector and the heat sink. The heat detector is based on a small metallic rod which attains steady state quickly and hence the heat transfer rate is calculated by conduction equation. For the quick dissipation of incident heat, a heat pipe is used. The design of the sensor was arrived at based on extensive 3D conduction analysis so as to get fast response together with high accuracy of the heat flux. The results were compared with experiments to ensure design methodology.
