Role of Metallothioneins in Adaptation of Lymnaea stagnalis (Mollusca: Pulmonata) to Environment Pollution

RESUMO

The efficiency of the heavy metals (zinc, copper and cadmium) binding by metallothioneins (MT), content of MT (MT-SH) and characteristics of antioxidant protective system were determined in the digestive gland of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis from the water bodies of Belarus − relatively clean and two industrially polluted. Elevated content of zinc and protein carbonyls were noted in snails from both polluted water bodies. Negative relation between the zinc-binding ability of MT and intensity of lipid peroxidation was proved.
