EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF BYPASS AIR ON BORON COMBUSTION IN A SOLID FUEL RAMJET

RESUMO

The effect of bypass air on boron combustion in a SFRJ motor was investigated experimentally. The bypass to total air mass flow rate ratio was varied in a series of tests at approximately constant total air mass flow rate, overall equivalence ratio, pressure and inlet air temperature. Combustion efficiency and particle size distribution measurements were conducted. In the series of tests presented, the combustion efficiency increased from 36% at 0% bypass ratio, to 85% at 42% bypass ratio. Multi-modal particle size distributions were measured with particle sizes as small as the Malvern Particle Sizer lower limit (0.5μ) and as large as 100 μ. The particle size distribution measurements did not exhibit any particular trends with varying bypass ratio.
