The thermo fluid dynamic behavior of the drying process realized into an industrial reactor is studied numerically using the commercial code Fluent. The study has been conducted in a reactor which provides dry product starting from the slurry injected and atomized in its chamber, heated by hot air. The air flow is composed by a continuum phase, air, and a discrete phase, assumed to be droplets made by water and a silica based mixture. In the numerical simulations, the Eulerian approach has been adopted to solve the continuum phase whereas the Lagrangian approach has been adopted for the discrete phase. Due to the complexity of the entire physics involved in the process, some aspects of the problem, mainly concerned with the solid particles properties, have been properly modeled. Results are presented for different air/liquid ratio in terms of global quantities and flow-field analysis.
