The system of the sea and freshwater prokaryotic and eukaryotic picoplankton, based on the analysis of published data, is presented, and the need for profound taxonomic investigation of the autotrophic picophytoplankton is emphasized. Variations of the species composition of nanophytoplankton in different waters and seasons were analyzed. Three Belarussian lakes of different biolimnological types (mesotrophic Lake Naroch', eutrophic Lake Myastro, and highly eutrophic Lake Batorino) were surveyed. Half of all phytoplankton proved to belong to nanophytoplankton, with the absolute prevalence of chlorococcoid algae in terms of the number of taxa, genera, and species. %8 1998-10-01
