%X The results of recent experimental and theoretical investigations of the initiation and spread of ground forest fires are presented. Based on the experimental data, the degree of the reliability of predicting the minimum energy required for ignition of the combustible material has been evaluated with the aid of a general mathematical model of forest fires. The methods to record the luminous temperature fields for determining the contours of the fire source and a new more precise formula for the velocity of the ground forest fire propagation are given.
