DIRECT NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF LAMINAR–TURBULENT TRANSITION AT SUPERSONIC FLOW OVER A SHARP FLAT PLATE

Numerical simulation of three-dimensional disturbances was carried out. These disturbances were excited in the boundary layer by periodic blowing/suction on the narrow part of a flat plate wall at free stream Mach number M = 3. The frequency and cross-flow wave number corresponded to the unstable oblique Tollmien–Schlichting waves, which led to favorable conditions in the nonlinear oblique breakdown. The linear and nonlinear regimes of the evolution of the development of disturbances downstream and the laminar–turbulent transition process were considered. The results are in a good agreement with other data. The results confirm the correctness of the used numerical technique and its applicability for investigating the development of three-dimensional disturbances in supersonic boundary layers, including the nonlinear laminar–turbulent transition stage.
