To correctly determine the different levels of hazards on an aircraft which happened during a lightning strike, the physical behavior of the lightning channel and the arc foot properties on the fuselage must be understood. The aim of this work is to study the behavior of a free lightning channel subjected to a continuous current. For this, calculations using a magneto-hydrodynamic modelling have been performed in Code_Saturne®, CFD software developed by EDF. These calculations have been compared to the experiment of Tanaka et al. A good agreement has been found on geometric parameters but the internal voltage gradient is overestimated by about 30%. A discussion concerning this difference is also presented.
