Modeling the Problems of Conjugate Heat and Mass Transfer in Processes of Gas-Laser Cutting of Materials

Results of numerical modeling of laser radiation interaction with metals, as applied to gas-laser cutting processes, are presented. A physico-mathematical description of interconnected processes is proposed in the form of aggregate statements of conjugate problems of the mechanics of continua with mobile boundaries, which allows assessing the impact of a great number of physical parameters, such as the beam velocity, radiation characteristics, thickness, and thermo-physical properties of the material, thermodynamic parameters of the co-current gas, etc., on the quality of processing. A physico-mathematical model of multiple reflection of laser radiation in its propagation in a narrow channel is proposed; this model allows description of the mechanism of radiant energy transfer into the channel, which is important for modeling laser cutting of thick materials. The impact of radiation polarization (linear, elliptical, and circular) on the absorption coefficient and the shape of the generated surface are analyzed. It was demonstrated, for the first time, that it is very effective to use elliptical polarization of the Gaussian beam with a quite definite relations of semi-axes, oriented along the direction of beam motion.
