The purpose is to analyze the flow configuration with attention to the turbulent mixing linked to large scales in the transition and turbulent zones. The full Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a high-order Godunov's scheme piecewise parabolic method with the approximate Riemann solver of Roe. On the basis of flow visualization, highly three-dimensional vortex lattices undergoing helical pairing of oblique structures are observed in the transition zone. A particular structure of mixing in sublayers is detected qualitatively and through probability density function analysis. Computed statistics are in good agreement with experimental measurements. %8 2005-09-09
