T1 Analysis of the Wind Loading of a Bridge Deck Box Section using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition JF International Journal of Fluid Mechanics Research JO FMR YR 2002 FD 2002-08-01 VO 29 IS 3&4 OP 11 AB Proper Orthogonal Decomposition is an effective tool for the stochastic analysis of the wind loading of structures. In this paper Covariance Proper Transformation is applied to the analysis of the wind excitation of a box bridge section. The results of wind tunnel pressure measurements on the stationary and vibrating deck sectional model are used in the analyses. An attempt is made to relate the different covariance modes to the different physical phenomena that contribute to the excitation of the deck, and to quantify these contributions for the different vibration regimes. Even though a general rule was not found, there is evidence that in many cases covariance modes can be associated to a specific behavior. Understanding of this correspondence would allow to carry out dynamic analyses of the bridge deck response retaining a limited number of covariance modes.
