RT Journal Article ID 3defff70699913cc A1 Davidovich, N. A. T1 Sexual heterogeneity of the clones of Nitzschia longissima (Breb.) Ralfs (Bacillariophyta) JF International Journal on Algae JO IJA YR 2002 FD 2002-09-01 VO 4 IS 3 SP 104 OP 116 AB Crossing of 38 clones of Nitzschia longissima (Breb.) Ralfs (Bacillariophyta) isolated from the coastal zone of the Black Sea near Karadag (Crimea) was carried out under laboratory conditions. This species is widely distributed in seas and oceans. It was shown that sexual heterogeneity is characteristic of the studied clones. N. longissima was previously believed to be a dioecious species, but was found to possess a more complicated sexual structure. One half of the clones were unisexual, whereas the other half of the clones were capable of unisexual interclonal crossing, and also of limited intraclonal reproduction. Some clones were capable only of intraclonal reproduction. A group of clones was not capable of crossing with the available clones. This group differed from other clones in the number of carinal points. Only male clones producing physiologically active gametes were capable of intraclonal reproduction.
