T1 EXTRACTION OF FLOW PROPERTIES FROM IMAGES USING AN IMPROVED DYNAMIC TRANSFORMATION FUNCTION JF Journal of Flow Visualization and Image Processing JO JFV YR 2000 FD 2000-09-01 VO 7 IS 3 OP 14 AB The current optical flow investigative techniques, which are based on the principle of laser sheet visualization (LSV), provide qualitative and quantitative information about the spatial structure of the phases present. These techniques rely on the quality of the acquired images from which flow property information is extracted. This can be a particularly acute problem in two-phase flows, where the transporting medium is a gas. Images obtained from such flow regimes produce pictures with poor contrast. Therefore, flow visualization and velocity measurements are difficult and particulate statistics are almost impossible tasks to achieve.
An adaptive contrast-enhancement technique to improve images obtained from laser sheet-based flow diagnostic methods is presented. This enhancement is based on a dynamic transformation function that deals with all types of laser sheet images, particularly those with dense backgrounds and poor contrast. The proposed adaptive contrast-enhancement technique, with its dynamic transformation function, is evaluated on some high density and poor contrast images.
