Undergraduate nonscience majors enrolled in an introductory-level science course are required to complete a service learning project by developing and conducting a series of hands-on exercises for area Junior Girl Scouts. The girls are given the opportunity to use technological tools such as Internet searching and Palm Pilot handheld computers to complete the requirements for a science badge. The activities are detailed and supplemented with a corresponding program workbook that promotes women in science careers. Postproject evaluations show the scouts reporting higher interest in science, more positive attitudes toward science, and a desire to earn more science-related badges. The undergraduates report a strong desire to complete additional projects to help serve the community. %8 2004-03-25
