Modern studies on the biology, chemistry, pharmacology, and clinical application of Ganoderma species started in China in the 1970s. Much progress has been made. This paper reviews the advances in the study of the pharmacological and clinical use of Ganoderma species during the past eight years in China. Generally, the aqueous extract of Ganoderma species had a sedative effect on the central nervous system, improving cardiocerebral circulation, lowering hyperlipemia, modulating the functions of immune systems, antiaging, and anticancer. Clinically, Ganoderma species was prepared as health foods and medicine in the forms of granules, capsules, and tablets. Ganoderma species should be applied to combat weakness, and sleepiness, and as a subsidiary agent in cancer therapy and the treatment of chronic hepatitis. It should be pointed out that Ganoderma lucidum is still a mystery. Many questions, such as identification of its active principles, The mechanisms of its actions still need to be investigated. Thus, scientists must put additional effort and cooperation into exploring futher medical uses of Ganoderma species. %8 1999-03-01
