ABSTRACT

The genus Tauya and its species Tauya basicrassa Kloczc. et Krupn., the new genus and species of the order Laminariales (Phaeophyta), are described from the NW shore of the Sea of Okhotsk. Data on ecology, distribution, and localities of the species are presented. The authors discuss differences between the new taxa and other representatives of laminarian algae, and prove their affiliation with the family Laminariaceae. The new genus differs from other genera of laminarians in having a thickened base of the lamina with rows of bullas, banded location of soruses of sporangia, and the presence of glandular cells. In Tauyskaya Guba (bay) at a large depth, the specific habitat has been found where representatives of the new species reach 6 m in length and 1.8 m in width.
