ABSTRACT

Generalized data on the species composition of Euglenophyta of the world are provided. There are 1041 species (1528 infraspecific taxa) of these algae known. They belong to one class (Euglenophyceae), two orders (Euglenales, Peranematales), six families (Eutreptiaceae, Euglenaceae, Menoidiaceae, Peranemataceae, Petalomonadaceae, Rhizaspidaceae), and 46 genera. The order Euglenales is exceptional by its species diversity (832 species and 1282 infraspecific taxa). The family Euglenaceae is the richest in species (775 species and 1219 infraspecific taxa). The largest genus is Trachelomonas, which contains 299 species (543 infraspecific taxa, i.e., 35.5 % of the whole infraspecific diversity of the division). Europe is leading among the continents by the level of floristic and taxonomic knowledge available (732 species and 1185 infraspecific taxa). Among floristic units, the best studied are Circumboreal (782 species/1296 infraspecific taxa). East Asian (232/385), Irano-Turanian (221/366), and Atlantic North American (205/315) regions.
