Morphology of new fossil species of Concentrodiscus and Alveolophora (Bacillariophyta) from bottom sediments of Lake Baikal
ABSTRACT
Two new species of the genus Concentrodiscus Khursevich, Moisseeva & Sukhova and one new species of the genus Alveolophora Moisseeva & Nevretdinova studied with light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been distinguished from the Upper Miocene sediments of the BDP-98 core, Lake Baikal. C. subabnormis Khursevich & Fedenya is characterized by a variable location of a single rimoportula on the valve surface and the absence of valve face fultoportulae. C. proteus Khursevich & Fedenya is distinguished by the constant placement of a single rimoportula near the valve center and a variable position of valve face fultoportulae. In addition, the description of C. indigenus Khursevich & Fedenya is defined more precisely. The new species of Alveolophora baicalensis Khursevich & Fedenya is characterized by the formation of both straight and curved valves along the central axis, as well as by a considerable number of pseudoseptae on the valve mantle.
