Morphology of new freshwater species of the genus Actinocyclus Ehrenberg (Bacillariophyta) from the Upper Miocene sediments of Lake Baikal, Siberia

ABSTRACT

Four new species of the genus Actinocyclus Ehrenberg, studied in light (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), are described from the Upper Miocene sediments of the BDP-98 drill core, Lake Baikal. They are distinguished by the different structure of rimoportulae, different forms of spines, and the density of their placement on the valve face/mantle junction. The morphological peculiarities of known fossil freshwater species of Actinocyclus krasskei are marked.
