Gender Differences in Biomechanical Aspects of Performance
ABSTRACT
There are numerous unanswered questions in the field of sport biomechanics regarding gender differences in performance of sports activities. Few studies are available that have specifically examined how technique differs between skilled male and female performers in a similar sports activity. Several researchers have examined the physical and structural differences between males and females that may affect performance, but few have actually related structure to performance. There is an extensive body of literature that has examined gender differences in various sports injuries, with current interest focused on the reasons for the high incidence of anterior cruciate ligament injuries in female athletes. Several recent studies have examined performances of males and females in such activities as throwing, shot put, and running; and some researchers have concluded that there may be different movement variables that are related to performance in females when compared to males.
