Wind Loads on Low Buildings - How Much Have We Progressed?

ABSTRACT

The paper reviews the evolution of the knowledge and its current state regarding evaluation of wind loads on low buildings. It describes the influence of this knowledge on formulation of design load provisions in contemporary wind standards and codes of practice. Although the level of confidence in new provisions becomes higher, the complexity of specifications also increases. Typical key results are presented and outstanding issues requiring more research are also discussed. These include the detailed evaluation of the effect of upstream roughness and its variation for different azimuths on the evaluation of wind loads on low buildings; the wind loads on buildings with geometries different from those examined in previous studies, particularly the evaluation of appropriate loading for the design of primary structural systems and other indirectly loaded surfaces; the total wind load acting On architectural features such as parapets and the like.
