CHARACTERIZATION OF BIOMASS CHARS: REACTIVITY AND MORPHOLOGY OF CHARS OBTAINED IN DIFFERENT CONDITIONS
ABSTRACT
A detailed investigation is fundamental to determine the most important features of alternative fuels in all steps of a thermal process. This work deals with the characterization of chars from various classes of materials (biomasses, wastes, low- and high-volatile coals) obtained by imposing different thermal histories during devolatilization. A methodological approach is developed and discussed, using laboratory facilities that extend the operating conditions over a very wide range. Global reactivity (from thermogravimetric analysis), size, shape, and density results on chars (from electrodynamic balance analysis) are discussed and related to scanning electron microscopy analysis in order to evaluate the effect of morphological changes after different thermal treatments. Char properties are verified to change significantly depending on the conditions used during the devolatilization. This methodological approach for char characterization can provide useful parameters for design, handling, or modeling because conditions similar to those of practical applications (high temperature and high heating rate) are used.
