ENTROPY-BASED THERMAL HYDRAULIC PERFORMANCES FOR MICROCHANNEL HEAT SINKS COMBINED WITH RIBS AND CAVITIES

ABSTRACT

Two microchannel heat sinks combined with ribs and cavities were numerically investigated and their comprehensive performance analyzed. To study the relationship among thermal resistance and pumping power, geometric parameters, and entropy generation rate, three different nondimensional variables were adopted that represented width, height, and spacing, respectively, of ribs and cavities. The entropy generation rate included that of heat transfer and flow friction. The entropy generation rate due to heat transfer was levels of magnitude higher than that of flow friction, especially under lower Reynolds numbers, and the value of the entropy generation rate due to fluid friction was very small. We found that microchannel heat sinks combined with ribs and cavities resulted in significant heat-transfer enhancement and a greater drops in pressure. We concluded that the geometric parameters of ribs and cavities significantly influence performance of microchannel heat sinks, and the value of rib and cavity width has no obvious effect on entropy generation rate. Finally, greater Reynolds numbers and greater rib and cavity heights led to tremendous increases in the entropy generation rate due to fluid friction.
