EXTREMAL PROPERTIES OF PRESSURE IN AXISYMMETRIC VORTEX GAS FLOWS

ABSTRACT

Based on the exact Euler equations of steady axisymmetric nonswirling vortex ideal gas flows, it is shown that the pressure minimum value is reached at the boundary of the subsonic flow domain in the absence of internal stagnation points. Violation of this extremal property is evidenced by the presence of a stagnation or sonic point. The analytical result obtained is illustrated by a computational fluid dynamics example. The result can be used to verify numerical calculations of the flow in the subsonic zone behind a detached bow shock wave near a body in revolution in a supersonic flow.
