EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF THE AIR INTAKE IN A FREE-MOLECULAR GAS FLOW
ABSTRACT
Intake models of flows of molecular nitrogen (with velocities up to 4 km/s), oxygen (up to 3 km/s), and helium (up to 7 km/s) are experimentally studied in the VAT-103 vacuum wind tunnel based at TsAGI. The gas density in a storage tank connected to the air intake is measured. In addition to the experiments, the probability of molecules flying through the intake is computed by the Monte Carlo method with two models of molecule reflection from the surface: (1) diffuse reflection and (2) the Nocilla model. It is shown that the diffuse reflection model ensures an adequate description of the experimental results.
