QUALITY OF PERCUSSION LASER DRILLED HOLES FOR COOLING OF TURBINE COMPONENTS

ABSTRACT

Increasing competition in the area of manufacturing demands that processes are cost efficient without compromising on product quality. Percussion laser drilling is a process being increasingly used by aerospace manufacturers for producing cooling holes in turbine components. Shape, precision and functional characteristics of the laser drilled holes have been individually considered in the past for determining the hole quality. In this paper, a concept of integrated hole quality in terms of its cooling efficiency has been developed. In turn, it is based on the shape and precision characteristics of the holes. Based on it, quality of holes produced in a nickel base superalloy 'SUPERNI 263A' at different laser pulse peak powers has been computed and presented. It has been found that integrated quality of the laser drilled holes for such applications is 56 − 88 % better than the straight walled holes. Use of higher pulse peak power is seen to slightly decrease the integrated quality of the holes.
