Analysis of mixed convection at high temperature during the material processing in rotary-kiln

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a numerical and experimental analysis are presented on the complete interface problem between the convective and radiative phenomena established in the interior and the exterior of an open rotary-kiln partially filled with material medium considered to process at high temperature. The material media is compound of sintered solid particles and the hypothesis of well mixing is considered. A finite element and a fractional step time methods are used for discretization the equations respectively in space and in time. The numerical results are compared to results of experimental heating of innert sand in the rotary kiln placed in the focus of solar parabolic concentrator of 1000 kW. The results are presented in term of isotherm contour plots and velocity field of fluid and of solid particles, for different values of rotational speed of kiln and of mass flow rate of solid-particles. We have shown that at high temperature the incompressibility condition should be satisfied at the elementary level and that the natural and the forced convection are not negligible relatively to the radiative phenomenon.
