EFFECT OF PLASMA STATE AND ALLOYING ADDITION ON REDUCTION OF Fe2O3 BY A LOW-TEMPERATURE HYDROGEN PLASMA

ABSTRACT

The paper presents investigations on influence of excited species present in low temperature hydrogen plasma and addition of an alloying element like Ni on reduction of Fe2O3. It is shown that the extra energy available in hydrogen plasma due to the presence of atomic hydrogen and vibrationally excited hydrogen molecules could reduce the activation energy of the reaction by similar extent. Low temperature hydrogen plasma with this extra energy could also remove the induction period observed by earlier researchers during reduction of NiO with molecular hydrogen. Further, addition of NiO to Fe2O3 enhances the reduction rate because of reduction in free energy of reaction due to alloying.
