HOLOGRAPHIC VISUALIZATION OF UNSTEADY NATURAL CONVECTIVE FLOW IN RECTANGULAR CAVITIES

ABSTRACT

The unsteady natural convective flow in a rectangular cavity, arising from instantaneous temperature changes in both vertical side walls of the cavity, is investigated experimentally by means of double-exposure as well as real time holographic interferometry. This advanced optical diagnostic technique allows the unsteady convective flow and its evolution to be visualized. The holographic visualization not only clearly reveals the thermal boundary, intrusion, circulating flow, stratified temperature distribution of the steady state flow, and their developing behaviors, but also facilitates a quantitative analysis of the thickness of the thermal boundary layer and intrusion. The experimental results are compared with previous numerical simulations.
