Influence of Convective Heat Exchange on a Rotating Disc in Superimposed Air Flow-Comparison Between Heat Pipe and Solid Discs

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study is to estimate the influence of convective heat exchanges on the cooling process of a rotating solid or heat pipe disc, subjected to an air flow parallel to its surface. The application to the TGV brake-disc-cooling during the braking phase is carried out. For a rotating disc in superposed air flow, the latter is a dominant factor in the heat transfer coefficient. The modelling of the heat transfer is achieved in solid and heat pipe discs, when simultaneously subjected to convective losses and entering heat flow. The simulation is validated through tests carried out on different model discs. Finally, the particular application to the rail braking (TGV) is completed. The temperatures computed inside the heat pipe brake-disc rotating in still air, during the braking phase remain lower than those obtained inside the solid brake-disc in superposed air flow.
