EVAPORATOR HEAT-TRANSFER ANALYSIS OF A LOOP HEAT PIPE WITH LOW THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY WICKS

ABSTRACT

Heat-transfer of an evaporator of a miniature loop heat pipe (LHP) with a PTFE porous wick was analyzed in this paper. Pore network model (PNM) was used to simulate detailed liquid flow in porous structure of the wick. Porous characteristics of the PTFE wick, which were used in our experiments, were represented in the calculation, such as pore radius distribution and permeability. Heat transfer of the wick and the evaporator case was solved with the PNM in a steady state. The wick was filled with liquid fully. The grooves were in the wick and rectangular. It assumed that evaporation occurred at the grooves-wick interface. The computational domain was three dimension of x-y-z coordinate system. Temperature and pressure fields of x-y, x-z, and y-z plane were presented with color figures. The results seemed to be reasonable, however, condensation at the grooves-wick interface was indicated. It was shown that the condensation depended on the groove width and applied heat flux to the evaporator case. The distribution of temperature and pressure for axial direction could not find because wall and insulated condition are imposed at both of the edge for z direction. The effect of the groove width on the evaporator temperature and heat leak to the CC was discussed.
