ABSTRACT

Capillary Pumped Loop can be used for cooling of high power electronics but must be pressurized in order to operate at low temperature. The present paper describes a new fully passive method (mechanical and electrical) to pressurize instantly the CPL. The pressurization with a non-condensable gas (NCG) located at reservoir level has been successfully tested with ICS-1 demonstrator. ICS-1 is a CPL with two flat evaporators in parallel and an air exchanger that use methanol as working fluid with a 6 microns nickel wick. The power transferred is up to 10 kW at 5g in a centrifuge. The investigated heat flux ranges from 4 to 37 W/cm2. Up to 28 start-up at 8kW (30W/cm2) and acceleration cycles from 1.1g to 10g at 2kW are also presented.
