ABSTRACT
Metallothioneins of tissues of digestive gland and gills of the bivalve Colletopterum piscinale (Unionidae) bind about 40% of copper, less then 10% of zinc and more then 80% of cadmium. These are represented by two chromatographic forms: MT-1 (Zn-MT) and MT-2 (Zn, Cu-MT). The content of zinc in tissues and metallothioneins is significantly higher in summer than in autumn while the level of copper is relatively stable. Metallothioneins of digestive gland are sensitive biomarkers of cadmium because these proteins allow its revealing when the content of cadmium in water is below the detection limit.
