ABSTRACT

The paper deals with the modern regime of water salinity in the lower reaches of the Dnieper River, and also with the response of phytoepiphyton to its fluctuations. During the period of investigations, dissolved solids content ranged from 268.20 to 2254.06 mg/L. Its spatial and temporal dynamics were as follows: dissolved solids content increased from the estuarine section of the river to the Rvach branch, and also from early summer until autumn. It has been found that such characteristics of phytoepiphyton as halobion indices and the contribution of indifferent organisms, halophiles, and mesohalobes to the total biomass of phytoepiphyton are reliable biological indicators of the fluctuations in water salinity in the lower reaches of the Dnieper River. The increase in phytoepiphyton halobion index up to 2.3, a decrease in the contribution of indifferent organisms to the total biomass to 70%, and the increase in the contribution of halophiles up to 30% can be used as biological indicators of the influx of salt waters from the Dnieper-Bug estuary into the lower reaches of the Dnieper River.
