On Long-term Dynamics of Spring Ooplankton of Open Part of the Maloye More Strait (the Baikal Lake)

ABSTRACT

The inter-annual dynamics of zooplankton in the open section of the Maloye More Strait (Baikal) from late XX to early XXI centuries is presented as continuation of the long-term investigations. Composition and quantitative parameters of the spring plankton and its main component Epischura baicalensis Sars, 1900 were investigated. The data on E. baicalensis biomass in 1997–2014 were compared with those of the long-term observations for 1964–1974. Recently increase of zooplankton biomass was noted owing to domination of copepod stages and mature specimens of E. baicalensis due to earlier reproduction of its spring generation. It was supposed that stated changes of the Epischura's population were caused by changes of ice-thermal and water regime of Baikal.
