Water Resources and Ecological Condition of the Dnieper

ABSTRACT

Structure and some functional characteristics of pelagic (phyto- and zooplankton) and contour (zoobenthos, zooperiphyton) communities of hydrobionts were studied in the cooling pond of the Zaporozh'ye Nuclear Power Station. Abundant development of subtropical planktonic species of algae and some thermophilic periphytic organisms, as well as inhibition of the development of mollusks - filter feeders, suggest that the ecosystem of the cooling pond is subjected to significant thermal load.
