Influence of Hydrochemical Indices on the Distribution of Phosphate Mobilizing Bacteria in Bottom Sediments of the Northwestern Part of the Black Sea (the Odessa Region)
ABSTRACT
Spatial and seasonal distribution of heterotrophic and phosphate mobilizing bacteria in bottom sediments of the northwestern part of the Black Sea (the Odessa region) was analyzed in 2009-2012. It has been found that in bottom sediments the numbers of heterotrophic and phosphate mobilizing bacteria were several times higher than those in water column, whereas the concentration of phosphorus compounds in pore solutions was one order of magnitude higher than that in water column. The maximal concentration of heterotrophic and phosphate mobilizing bacteria in the upper layer of bottom sediments was observed in the coastal zone of Odessa Bay and in the sections subjected to the most intensive anthropogenic load. Relationship was established between the numbers of heterotrophic and phosphate mobilizing bacteria in bottom sediments and hydrochemical indices.
