OVERVIEW OF BORON DUCTED ROCKET DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT

The paper summarizes technological and project oriented development work carried out at MBB and Bayern-Chemie since 1970. The objective of the work was to develop propulsion systems far superior to conventional rocket motors to be applied for long range surface/surface or surface/air missions. Ultimate performance and reliability requirements led to the ducted rocket using high energy solid propellants. Highly boron loaded propellant formulations promise a most favourable energetic potential. However the combustion characteristics of boron impose numerous problems requiring closely integrated development work for propellant formulation and engine design. The paper is subdivided into
1. propellant development
2. engine development and design
3. development testing and results
The first two paragraphs are looking at those fields where the propulsion system development is especially challenged by the application of boron. Emphasis is laid on the illustration of the close interrelationship between solutions to be found for propellant and/or engine related problems.
The third paragraph gives an overview of the technical level which has been achieved with the boron ducted rocket and examples of the application to various propulsion systems developed at MBB/Bayern-Chemie.
