RÉSUMÉ

A common phenomenon observed during fluid flow in pipes is water (or steam) hammer due to hydraulic transient. The hydraulic transient takes place when a fluid in motion is forced to stop or change directions suddenly. This creates a pressure wave propagation which has adverse effects on the system, creating noise, vibrations and even fatal failure. It is very important in many industrial applications such as water distribution system, power plants, petroleum industries, sewage pipelines, fluid structure interactions, Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) in nuclear power plant, etc. This creates the need for understanding the behavior of the evolved pressure transient. An in-house code is developed which can capture the physical situation and the distribution of various parameters like pressure, velocity and temperature associated with the shock wave propagation. A three-equation model using high resolution shock capturing scheme is used for the simulation. The method uses a system of hyperbolic equations to predict the solution of the present problem. Both water and steam are to be considered in the study for studying wave collision and end reflection in a shock tube.
