RÉSUMÉ

The GKSS-Forschungszentrum is currently conducting a test program on a multivent BWR-related pressure suppression system. The main subject of this experimental R&D work is to provide definitive information about the function and the effectiveness of a pressure suppression containment under loss-of-coolant-accident conditions /1/. During the tests, a mixture of air, steam, and water droplets flow inside the vent pipe system. Infrared equipment /2/ was installed to measure the absorption and the scattering of infrared light in the flow of air-steam- and water droplets. The measuring aim was the calculation of the steam density in the flow. The accuracy of the steam density calculation is dependent on the determination of the attenuation factors and the absorption coefficient; both are determined as one constant of the equipment, C1. The application has been improved by elimination of the effect of water fogging of the immersion tube lenses. The experience with this infrared measurement equipment shows an application without operational problems; the flow area is not influenced and the boundary condition of the measuring points are only dependent on the flow mixture. It has been found that this infrared measuring system provides a very sensitive measure of vapor density oscillation with detailed information about the nature of the analyzed flow which cannot be realized by measuring only pressure and temperature.
