Evaluation of Sea Breeze Cooling in Osaka Area, Japan using a Meteorological Model
RÉSUMÉ
The relation between local circulation and surface air temperature during mid-summer in Osaka
plain was investigated with measurements obtained at surface layer and upper layer. As an index of sea breeze
cooling, the amount of sensible heat advection was calculated by using a meteorological model.
It was found that the plain area in Osaka is dominated by the sea breeze over 80% in the daytime on sunny
days, so a promotion of the sea breeze introduction into the city area will be an effective countermeasures
against the urban heat island problems in this area. The maximum air temperatures near the ground surface in
land-sea breeze case and in westerly wind case are nearly identical, and both of these values are about 1 °C
lower than that of in easterly case. The cooling rate shows the maximum value of 600 W/m2 when sea breeze has reached under the condition we investigated.
