RÉSUMÉ

Direct numerical and large eddy simulation have been applied to study the intermittency in a turbulent round jet with a Reynolds number of 2400. Comparisons between time-averaged results for the velocity and scalar fields demonstrate reasonable agreement with the data and predictions of other authors, and between the present LES and DNS, although notable differences do occur in the latter. Derived probability density functions are also in reasonable agreement, although the DNS results demonstrate the more rapid influence of intermittency with radial distance in the jet. This is reflected in derived intermittency profiles, with LES generally giving profiles that are broader than equivalent DNS results. Despite these differences, the transition from turbulent to non-turbulent flow is always predicted to be more rapid for the scalar than for velocity with, in general, this transition occurring closer to the centre-line for the scalar than for the velocity.
