We present the results of the direct numerical simulation of biomass pyrolysis and combustion. The DNS model of biomass pyrolysis developed by Russo et al. (2014) is extended to include biomass combustion. Transfer of momentum, mass, and energy between gas and particles are fully taken into account. We analyze the effect of this two-way coupling on the conversion time of the particles. The two-way coupling effects are found to be relevant at volume fractions Ø > 10−5. We also present the effects of particle size and volume fraction on the conversion time of particles.
