In this paper the PROMETHEE methods are applied to evaluate and rank alternative heat exchanger networks with respect to a number of criteria like cost, net present value and complexity. The purpose is to select a heat exchanger network which is a good compromise between multiple criteria.
Results show that the proposed methods enable to incorporate (strategic) managerial aspects into the decision en the design of a heat exchanger network. This leads to "optimal" compromise solutions that are entirely different from the ones generated by the methods on designing heat exchanger networks, that have been presented in literature sofar.
