RÉSUMÉ
In a plate-fin heat exchanger, there is heat transfer between streams in non-adjacent layers by conduction through the plate-fin matrix, as well as the usual heat transfer between streams in adjacent layers. It is shown that the matrix conduction heat transfer can be expressed in terms of a "by-pass efficiency" in each layer, which is a function of the same variables as the conventional fin efficiency. Methods of integrating the resulting heat transfer equations to calculate stream outlet conditions corresponding to given stream inlet conditions are suggested for co- and counter-current multistream exchangers.
