RÉSUMÉ

The International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer (ICHMT) invited the Twente University of Technology (Mechanical and Chemical Engineering Departments) to organize the Advanced Course "Fluidized Bed Combustion." Although the time available for preparation was extremely short we accepted that invitation because of our vivid interest in the subject.
This book contains the collected course notes and deals with various aspects of fluidized bed combustion systems: materials handling, fundamentals of fluidization, fluidized bed combustors, fuels and combustion, fuel circulation and segregation, heat transfer, sulphur oxides reduction, thermodynamic cycles, and finally instructions for the design of fluidized bed boilers.
Because an advanced course in this field was requested, we presumed that the participants already had a fair knowledge of the subject. Structuring this course it has been attempted to find the optimum combination of a fundamental and applied approach. Many important subjects have been discussed. It was impossible however to deal with each problem that may occur in FBC practice. Corrosion and erosion problems for instance were excluded and so was fly ash treating because of its similarity with conventional systems.
Being somewhat kaleidoscopic, as an assembly of course notes often tends to be, we nevertheless hope that these proceedings turn out to be a useful guide for further studies and a valuable addition to the already impressive amount of information on fluidized bed combustion available from conferences or papers in the specialized journals.
The organization of the lectures was financially supported by the following organizations: United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, Paris; Boris Kidric Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade; MINEL—Energy and Industrial Plants Producer, Belgrade; TPK—Thermo-power Plant and Process Equipments and Boilers Industry, Zagreb; Djuro Djakovic—Power Plant Equipment Industry, Slavonski Brod; GOSA Industries, Belgrade; CER—Factory of Thermotechnical Units and Mountage, Cacak.
I would like to express my appreciation to the authors for their most helpful cooperation in preparing this book within a very short time. At the same time I would like to express my gratitude to the ICHMT for organizing the Advanced Course, especially to the scientific secretary, N. Afgan.
