T1 Algal metabolism as a factor of ammonium nitrogen detoxication of water bodies JF International Journal on Algae JO IJA YR 1999 FD 1999-06-16 VO 1 IS 2 SP 18 OP 26 AB NH+4 and NH3 accumulation in water bodies, due to internal processes or alochthonous delivery, reduces water quantity and inhibits the growth of many species of aquatic organisms. Dissolved ammonia is assimilated by algae and detoxified by intracellular amidation of glutaminic and asparaginic acids. The rate of algal detoxication of dissolved ammonia is determined by the concentration of ammonium nitrogen and by biological characteristics of the algae.
